How To Read

The following is a creative reading of Gertrude Stein’s How to Write. Do not consider it an accurate analysis of the work. Do not consider it accurate. Do not consider it analysis. Do not consider it. Do not consider. Do not. Do.

Words are lifted from the text liberally and in a willy-nilly fashion. I do not use quotation marks. Much of the what follows is a rearrangement of her words sometimes back into the order in which they were originally found. All reading is an act of plagiarism, creative reading even moreso. Tenfold.

You can never quote this because you can never know if you are quoting Gertrude Stein or author Bryan Edenfield. The only solution is to also plagiarize, a daisy chain of criminal elaborations.

The text creatively read was the Dover edition (1975).

A sentence should be arbitrary it should not please be better. This is an ordinary paragraph made different by content. Context: sentences make one sigh.

Grammar is a deception of meaning, sinister experiments with words, a nonsense emerges to ward something wise, grammar a deception of meaning, or a house (I use commas). A house to rebuild thinking allows for a wandering mind while reading what is disassembled a grammar, a melody—the design of what we like to hear and how it comes after the melody or refrain or song. How to hear what you think already hidden? Sound is not family, care for careful and colorful sound, grammar a math or an organization or a making of organs. Grammar is drained with by and to. Drained here, sound and time (Hour our last hour glass.) and the sound of organs in a church in our body.

Our pets are divine and full of care. They house the author in the grass, forget that grammar is an accounting. Meaning is in knots not meaning possession. I am possessed. Cut it out. I am a circle, patient and careless, gentle with sound a sound that succumbs not to secret messages but to messes. Mathematics is a mess of sound in a careless world filled with careless words. Grammar is a descension to places opening to places, but words don’t mean anything so grammar is an appointment with meaning: this is called cause and effect. Grammar is a conditional expanse.

A song in space is a collection of bird-sounds a continuity a location a dislocation this makes time a space. People is meeting grammar; grammar is meeting people. This is too easy. A grammar has been called a grammar of diagram. A grammar has been called a list of what is to be done with it. This is to ease. Arthur is the author of grammar but who is an announcement. Places divide into divisions and there is sound fertile as grammar, a resemblance. Who is an announcement in the time house no grammar arouses grammar we author a grammar or we don’t write rightly because grammar is useless because there’s nothing to say. We have no vocabulary.

A sigh is a grammar even a baby can speak, a language with meaning. We under stand that grammar so wonder, does linguistics recognize the baby’s sigh. It is thinking but babies don’t prepare. Language begins a sigh the first vocabulary but is a sigh thinking? A grammar is a question and answer a subject and object but no. No answers I say only questions. Babies don’t prepare. A sigh is thinking even babies do. No. A sigh is before thinking, meaning before thought, a grammar before thought or we invent a grammar later. We invent a grammar later. A daisy chain attuned to the diagram. The diagram is all sound as grammar even a sigh arranged and attuned, tuned to the end. It always needs an end, mathematically. There is a cold door closed even in a house with an open door. Words make the mind instantly like magic. Whenever words come before the mind there is a mistake.

What is a deliberate clause? It is organized into a diagram with or without windows. Houses need not have windows but probably should but this doesn’t change, they are an organ a diagram a mathematics the home like an egg something ready to hatch like a scheme a schematic a diagram eggs are organs too. Announce yourself and compose your self author before you enter the parlor of the house or before you enter the egg and make a mess of the place with a careless grammar. In a breath. A sigh. A question an invitation into the house and? Doubt. We will all have doubt. We leave it laying about the house a mess careless broken shells of birds singing pigeons and the baby again perched too with pigeons so disturb them fine. How come, a treatise in sound and sense and not correlated to grammar. Be deception. Destroy the literal.

What is a narrative? Birds and food, but not birds as food or food for birds but birds, then food. Then space, then the house, shut the door, become coupled. Coupled? Grammar is indwelling without a premonition of accomplishment but there is succor. Living in a house with nothing to do no why of speech to point but still sweet home sweet et cetera. A sentence means that there is a future. An end. A coupling or a putting together of, sexy time a joining. Enter my home and defile my portraits with animal graffiti so we may cook with grammar like cooking and feasting and baking so this is a language too, but a mystery. A mystery the animal with organs without words still needs some words to be, give birth the animals to sound sound a song a thought of things. In other words some animals don’t have grammar but almost but I say why not.

This is language for animals: A landscape with river. There is a forest. There are crops. This is how we imagine things. Clouds tear the sky. Your house is somewhere here in this diagram and that is why grammar is not dull because it is a diagram. Is grammar an answer? No it is a question in fact it is two questions. Grammar trumpets the subject to birth sound the object? Grammar is a collection of observations after the fact as grammar comes after speaking see. There is no white without the thing that is white color but an attribute, but not for the synesthete and maybe not for us. Let me introduce you to the dysfunctional family, grammar.

If it has fun grammar makes no mistakes. Arthur and Josephine and Hannibal the author’s hand is able to rain to climb a tree where they live. It is and is not a house but not a house on a hill, a hill where omens happen, a man on a hill in a house grammar before the branches in front of the house. Copulation and then children. Non-coital copulation might be viral but I don’t think it results in Platonic forms. You as a signature as grammar because the house is malleable. The house gains windows finally. Sheesh. The house is on a hill the grammar a family the Hills the grammar of geography; the earth’s grammar is borrowed for warfare dumbly because human usage becomes meaning but the Hills have their own grammar without warfare.

Grammar does mean arithmetic. It is a math or a delineation of thinking a building and a dwelling nah whoops that’s someone else. Grammar makes same-named things different; we can call many things Danny. They don’t have to be the same Danny. Grammar allows for finite words and a naming thus to be said a communication for if all things and moments are received the grammar caresses their own words nothing would ever really be said because similarities and differences. Thinking about grammar is kindling. The tree makes shade and shelter and kindling. The tree makes a house as do their shadows. Landscape is not a grammar and neither is combination but why not? Is geology a grammar? Only houses. Perhaps that’s the patriarchy. Grammar is contained in father. That’s the patriarchy. But grammar has nothing to do with form. Take that Plato. Now let me introduce you to Arthur and Josephine Hannibal, plus kids, and Arthur and Josephine Hill, their son Samuel.

Because sometimes we speak not of the original state but a malformation or a manipulation. Grammar is never opposed to secretiveness. Glorious secrets know there would be no knowledge to know lest there be secrets. Knowledge requires secrets. We don’t always want to face this: Knowledge is too fragile to be free. Someone must protect it, in a house on a hill in the shade in a valley near a forest on fire. Someone must cook a meal because knowledge is a meal. Do not consume it all. The forest is on fire. Do not consume it all. I can be your kindling.

Arthur is a Grammar but I am a Grammarian from the nation of Grammar. A Grammarian is a citizen but does not necessarily belong to the unique ethnic group of Grammar as Arthur does. The nation is named after his family and I am just a visitor here where though I do live, summer elsewhere and winter in the sky, I spring and fall into Grammar. The Grammar family grows more distant now cousins still close but maybe not. What’s a grammar then. Do we need to ask. We always must ask because we’re always forgetting a grammar of memory, of forgetting and of doubt, doubt and forgetting national pastimes. What unnatural and strange terrain for an American because forgetting is normal but only can be forgetting if there is also doubt through which we ask questions. Sometimes America is a country of forgetting without doubt and so not a country of forgetting at all but a country of dummies, mannequins, inanimacies. Mistakes are normal but.
